CDL Pre-Trip Inspection Checklist
The pre-trip inspection is both a CDL exam requirement and a daily safety necessity. Examiners watch for a systematic approach — not just checking boxes, but checking items in a logical order.
Engine Compartment
- Oil level — check dipstick, look for leaks
- Coolant level and condition
- Power steering fluid level
- Belts — check condition and tension
- Hoses — check for leaks, cracks, bulges
Cab Check
- Emergency equipment — fire extinguisher, triangles, spare fuses
- Seat belt — condition and function
- Mirrors — clean and properly adjusted
- Warning lights — all functional
Lights and Reflectors
- Headlights (high and low beam)
- Turn signals (front and rear)
- Brake lights
- Tail lights and clearance lights
- Reflectors — clean and undamaged
Tires and Wheels
- Minimum tread: 4/32 on steering tires, 2/32 on others
- No cuts, bulges, or exposed cords
- Proper inflation — check with tire gauge
- Lug nuts — none missing or loose
Brake System
- Air pressure builds properly (100-125 PSI range)
- No leaks — static test: loss under 2 PSI/min
- Low pressure warning functional
- Parking brake holds
